about
My name is Sinem Saban, I was born in Melbourne, Australia to Turkish Cypriot parents who migrated there in 1972. My parents were the first to call me 'gypsy' as I would always be travelling somewhere, even on a short journey, ready for a different experience that satisfied my yearning to feel freedom in life.
For the past 8 years, I have been visiting and working in Aboriginal communities in N.E Arnhem Land; namely Galiwinku, Maningrida and Yirrkala. I feel honoured to experience and often participate in their timeless 60,000 year- old culture. I have been shown how to weave baskets, find food in the bush, and have sat under many trees listening to the women speak their dreamtime stories. I have a strong passion to assist in the acknowledgement and understanding of their culture, which serves as the driving force behind my work.
The aim and philosophy of 'gypsysister' is to celebrate and connect with humanity, culture, nature and art. This is my work. I hope you enjoy it and connect in someway. Click for a downloadable PDF file
